A while ago, I was casually scrolling through Instagram and found out that Urban Decay had launched a new product. At first glance, I thought that the brand had come out with a range of blushes but after reading the caption, I realised that they had actually released a line of lipsticks! Since I’m a self-proclaimed lipstick addict, I obviously needed to get my hands on it. Here is my review of the brand’s Lo-Fi Lip Mousse in ‘Boom’.
Unlike traditional lipsticks, this one does not come in a standard, bullet form. Instead, it is packaged in a purple compact – which is why I initially thought that it was a blush. Once you open the compact, a tiny doe-foot applicator pops out. This applicator is quite like the sponge brushes that come with many eye shadow palettes. The compact also has a mirror attached inside it, which makes it easy to touch up on the go. The exact shade name is mentioned on a sticker beneath the compact.
In terms of formula, this lipstick was definitely unexpected. Upon pressing the squishy compact, I expected a thick, mousse-like liquid to ooze out. What I got instead was a thin, powdery coat of colour that went on smoothly. ‘Boom’ is a beautiful, deep berry shade with a demi-matte finish. The formula blends like a dream and layers on easily to provide more opacity. Whilst I was skeptical about the applicator, it actually works really well to line the lips and build up the colour. When I want a sheer, blotted look, I prefer patting in the product with my fingers. The lipstick is neither flavoured nor scented.
I’ve worn this lipstick out on several occasions recently and have mixed opinions about it. Although the colour is extremely flattering on my skin, it only stays put for about 3-4 hours. Whilst it does last through sips of coffee, it breaks down on contact with food. The formula is neither drying nor hydrating, but does emphasise any dry patches and lines on my lips. On the plus side, it feels absolutely weightless and is very comfortable to wear.
Lightweight, versatile and innovative, this lipstick is one I would recommend. Whilst it isn’t the most long lasting one I’ve tried, it is definitely one of the prettiest shades I’ve worn recently.
