Review: NYX Slide On Eye Pencils

NYX Slide On Eye Pencils (Top To Bottom) In ‘Purple Blaze’, ‘Brown Perfection’ and ‘Jewel’

When I just began getting into makeup, I would hoard eye liners in every colour. From lime green to glittery blues, my stash knew no bounds. However, over the past few years, I’ve slowly (and unintentionally) gravitated to the classic black… until now. Since we’ve been in lockdown for the better part of the year, I’ve only turned to makeup that sparks joy – and what could be more fun than a colourful liner? Thus, I picked up a few of the NYX Slide On Eye Pencils to experiment with. Here is my review.

As described, these liners come in the form of eye pencils. This is not my favourite format as they do require to be sharpened frequently, which leads to product wastage. Each of the pencils features the shade name at the bottom and is the same colour as the formula inside.

While this range features 16 shades, I decided to pick up the 3 that I was most drawn to – ‘Purple Blaze’, ‘Brown Perfection’ and ‘Jewel’. Each of these pencils had a creamy consistency and glided on smoothly, without tugging at my skin. ‘Purple Blaze’ is a shimmery, violet shade, while ‘Brown Perfection’ is a rich brown with a matte finish. ‘Jewel’ is the one that I was most excited about, as the colour is quite unusual. The deep mauve hue features tiny sparkles that look really pretty. ‘Brown Perfection’ is the most pigmented out of the lot and achieves full opacity in a single swipe. The other shades require 2 to 3 coats. The one thing you have to be careful about is giving these formulas sufficient time (about 5 minutes) to dry down and set completely. This is a plus point if you like blurring out your liner, but if you are in a hurry, it can be a deterrent.

I’ve been wearing these shades for the past month, both on my lids and my waterline. When it comes to the former, all of the 3 shades stay put for around 6 hours, without smudging or flaking. If you have oily lids, I would recommend prepping with a primer to prevent the colours from fading prematurely. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for my waterline. ‘Brown Perfection’ is the only one that survived for over 4 hours – ‘Purple Blaze’ got streaky within minutes, while ‘Jewel’ all but disappeared within the hour. The good part is that none of these shades irritated my eyes, even while I was wearing contact lenses.

Creamy, opaque and long-lasting (on the lids), these eye pencils are worth trying out. Given the price point, I would definitely be open to adding some more shades to my collection.
