Review: The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

Is anyone not obsessed with The Ordinary? After having great success with a few of their formulas (and that unmatchable price point), I decided to get my hands on another serum. Since I have been dealing with a bit of congestion and pigmentation, I decided to purchase the brand’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%. Here is my review.

The packaging is exactly the same as the rest of the products from the line. The frosted glass bottle gives off a clinical vibe that feels very on brand. The glass pipette dispenses the formula easily and is hygienic to use. However, it is a tad short so when you reach the end of the bottle, you may have to open up the top to get out the last couple of drops. The ingredients and directions for use are mentioned on the accompanying box.

In terms of formula, this serum had a few hits and misses. The runny consistency feels weightless on skin and glides across the face easily. Since the serum is clear in colour, it dries down invisibly. However, it leaves behind a tacky film. As with the Hyaluronic Acid serum, I found that applying it on damp skin goes a long way in dealing with the stickiness. 3-4 drops are sufficient to cover my entire face. Whilst the serum does not have any added fragrances, it still has a distinct, plastic-like scent to it.

I’ve been testing this serum out over the past few months and unfortunately, I’m not that impressed with it. Although it claims to deal with sebum production, it hasn’t really made my combination skin any less oily. It also has no effect on active zits, but does slightly reduce the frequency of breakouts. The serum also pills under other skincare and makeup products, so I can only use it at night. On the plus side, it has helped speed up the fading process of some dark spots. However, I feel that there are better formulas out there that can do the same in a lesser amount of time.

Sadly, this is the first product from the brand that hasn’t lived up to my expectations. I’m going to try it out again during the summer to see if it balances out my complexion better. I’ll be sure to keep you posted on the results!
